Obituary for Wilbur Ervin Jr.

Wilbur Stephenson Ervin, Jr.


Wilbur Stephenson Ervin, Jr., 87, passed away peacefully at his home on August 20, 2011 after a long illness. Born in Havre de Grace, Maryland, he was the eldest of three children to the late Wilbur Stephenson Ervin, Sr. and Anna Laura (Crawford) Ervin. He was the devoted husband of the late Stefania (Torfidottir) Ervin and the loving father of Stefania Crum and Cindy Height. He was the adored grandfather of Erin Hoke, the late Elyse Crum, Kristin Height and Will Height. He was the great-grandfather of Aidan Height and he was the dear brother of Crawford Ervin and Virginia Holcomb.
Mr. Ervin was selected for the U.S. Navy Air Corp V5 program to become a pilot during World War II in Corpus Christi, Texas. The program was discontinued prior to the end of the war. He went onto study Meteorology at the University of Okalahoma and the University of Idaho while completing his service for the U.S. Navy. Upon discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1944, he took a Meteorology position at the Aberdeen Proving Ground where he was given the opportunity to work in Iceland. He returned to the United States in 1950 where he continued his work at the Aberdeen Proving Ground for the remaining tenure of his career.
Mr. Ervin graduated from Havre de GraceHigh School as President of his Class in 1941. When Mr. Ervin was in high school, he ran track, mostly short dashes, where he became known for his speed. He was affectionately nicknamed “Wiz” for his running accomplishments. Mr. Ervin enjoyed horse racing, wildlife and nature, and was an avid bass fisherman. He also enjoyed reading, history, and traveling. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Perryville, Maryland. He was also a 60 year member of the Havre de GraceUnitedMethodistChurch, where he also served as an usher.
A service will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2011, 1:00 PM, at the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church, 101 South Union Avenue, Havre de Grace, Maryland. Pastor Norman Obenshain will officiate. Interment will be held at AngelHillCemetery, Havre de Grace, Maryland.
