Joan Hines was a stellar human being. She was intelligent, compassionate, warm-hearted, and generous with her time and talent when the occasion called for it. Another fine quality which doesn't get mentioned as frequently is that Joan had an unexpected sense of humor. She liked to laugh and to get others to join her.
One day about five years ago, I asked Joan what she did for entertainment beside swimming (splashing) at the health club. She surprised me when she said she liked to go to the races in Delaware. That had never crossed my mind, so I inquired "Why"?
Joan liked the variety of people, the excitement, and the occasional race her choice won. Can't say I was a whole lot more interested. I asked, "Do you really just go in the hopes of hitting a big payoff?" "No. I bet because I like a horse's looks and hardly lose a fortune if he's a slow-runner, anyway." Finally, I asked,"How much did you win on the last race you bet?" Straightfaced, Joan replied, "Nothing. The horse dropped dead before the finish line. That just took away the desire to stay for more races."
He did, and she didn't.
