Obituary for Madelyn Mitchell Shank

Madelyn Mitchell Shank, of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away on October 12, 2015. She was 87.
She was born in Havre de Grace, MD, to Robert Madison Mitchell, Sr., and Helen Maslin Mitchell. She was the devoted wife of 62 years of Ellsworth B. Shank, loving mother of E. Mitchell “Mitch” Shank and wife Jessica Hartmann Shank, of Havre de Grace, MD, and the late John Andrew “Andy” Shank. She was the grandmother of Jeriah David Shank and his wife Shawna Lynn Shank of Monroe, Iowa, Catherine “Michi Shank” and R. J. Smith of Falls Church, Virginia, and the late John Andrew “Drew” Shank and great-grandmother of Hannah Lynn Shank, Kaylee Lynn Shank, and the late Brenna Lynn Shank, and sister of R. Madison Mitchell, Jr. She is also survived by her former daughter-in-law, Mary Kamberger, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Shank was a graduate of the Havre de Grace High School Class of 1945. She received her Degree in Mortuary Science from Eckels College of Mortuary Science in 1948, and received her Mortician’s License in 1950. She worked for Mitchell Funeral Home, P.A., which was started by her father R. Maddison Mitchell, then Mitchell- Smith Funeral Home, P.A., Crouch Funeral Home, P.A., and Zellman Funeral Home, P.A. She was a member of Havre de Grace Presbyterian Church for over 80 years, serving on the Deacons and Elders Board for several years. She was a Charter Member of the Soroptimist Club of Harford County, Havre de Grace Decoy Museum Board of


Directors, Life Member of the Susquehanna Museum at the Lockhouse, where she served as the Founder and Co-Chair for the Candlelight tour for over 30 years, and as a volunteer coordinator. Mrs. Shank was also inducted into the Havre de Grace High School Hall of Fame in 2011. In 2015, she was recognized as a Harford County Living Treasure. Mrs. Shank loved traveling and antiques. She loved taking care of and being with her family, whether it was vacationing or just making sure everyone had what they needed.

A viewing will be held on Friday, October 16, 2015, from 1-4 and 6-8 PM, at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 South Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD. Funeral services will be held at Havre de Grace Presbyterian Church, 551 Franklin Street, Havre de Grace, MD, on Saturday, October 17, 2015, 11:00 AM. Pastor Jeriah David Shank, Pastor Jane Day Stover, and Pastor George Hipkins will officiate. Pallbearers will be Robert M. Mitchell, III, Robert T. Crouch, Greg Smith, Mike Transparenti, Patrick Vincenti, Scott Maslin, John O. Mitchell, III, Dr. Louis Silverstein, and Ronald Mathias.
