Rudy and Millie, American Classics

To the Dabran family from their son-in-law who named his son 'Rudy' Your parents’ 50th wedding anniversary, the best party any of us had been to. No guile. Pure joy. Millie and Rudy, classics. Speeches! You in your dress. Under the tent, people swirling around, kids bumping into each other. Little Rudy teaching everyone the thumb game. And your parents were stars, as they always have been. Hearing about Millie and Rudy roaring off in the red Miada, geared up in their hats. Endless stories of them combing the countryside in the little red. Your mom always had a crooked slightly sly smile and so did her eyes, Irish, your dad always with the symmetrical jaw and lips, only to part wide usually with the ever present toothpick. Thick leather gloves and leather jacket steering the sports car, and Rudy. The past 7 years visiting your parents in HdG, high points always dinner at McGregor’s, your parents across from me at the table and we always, always, had a really good time and laugh. Eyeing the menu, sitting just outside under the heated deck, I was usually there in Feb. And the obligatory preliminary dialogue on cholesterol, etc, and then Rudy and Millie went whole hog, followed by an artery hardening dessert, and then they’d whip out the discount cards, and we’d have a really great time, there at McGregor’s. The occasional train going by over the bridge from NYC to DC, whistling. Like being in a 3D painting of a Rockwell American Classic. And that is Rudy and Millie.
